The legacy of EMDR : review and Perspectives

One wonders what effect Dr. Francine Shapiro’s death will have on the future development of EMDR therapy. This innovative approach revolutionized psychotherapeutic practice the world over, one could argue it has contributed to significantly reducing human suffering. Before EMDR therapy began to take hold on the world stage, the field of psychotherapy was virtually powerless when dealing with psychological trauma. This novel intervention changed that by offering a comprehensive solution for understanding and managing various forms psychological trauma. Of course, more research is needed, both in terms of psychopathology and therapeutics. Today, however, EMDR has already proven effective for successfully treating far more than PTSD. Realizing its full potential as a mental health intervention going forward will rely heavily on the ability of clinicians and researchers to adapt and innovate.

The objective of the EMDR.22 Conference will be to provide an overview of both the current state of Francine Shapiro’s legacy and perspectives on the future of EMDR as a comprehensive psychotherapy approach. Two risks will be central to the discussion: placing too great an emphasis on preserving the general frameworks Dr. Shapiro used to create and develop EMDR therapy such that we inhibit innovation or straying so far from these frameworks that we risk seeing an even greater emergence of approaches that amount to mere interpretations. Our job will be to define the contours of this legacy entrusted to us by Dr. Shapiro, reflect carefully on whether this responsibility includes moving beyond EMDR, decide together as clinicians and researchers on how we might prepare for the future and identify challenges EMDR therapy is likely to face in coming years.
